Kolonihagen was born by idealists. Katrine, Jorunn and Jon Frede believe in supplying every Norwegian with clean, organic food. It’s better for the people and the planet. As it often is with idealists, they are hungry for change, and constantly seeking new ways to do traditional things. With that in mind, we helped them refine and redesign the Kolonihagen brand so everybody can take part in the journey towards a better world.

From One Idealist to Another

Way before it was mainstream, Kolonihagen promoted animal welfare and environmental responsibility. Since 2004, the team has delivered meal boxes and started a bakery and several restaurants while collaborating with like-minded companies. When Norwegian discount retailer REMA 1000 bought a stake in the company, it allowed them to get a much broader reach to a new audience of likeminded idealists

However, the rapid growth also sparked a feeling of having lost some control over the Kolonihagen brand. It was time to revisit the core. Working closely with the team, we uncovered a guiding principle that reflects the founding spirit, “We who want it differently”. Five simple words that encapsulate an idealistic, innovative and insatiable appetite for exploring better solutions. At Kolonihagen, you never arrive; you’re just one step further in the right direction.

Achieving Balance To Get Ahead

From the strategic platform to the new visual identity and packaging design, you’ll find a shared spirit of idealism and innovation. Gone are the farming pastiche and naturalistic romanticism; instead, you’ll find a playful, informative and refreshingly easy-going expression. Truly something for those who want it differently.

The illustrations clearly take centre stage on the packaging. Inspired by screen printing, it represents humanity and honesty and creates a rich contrast to the tight grid system in black and white. This system frames the story behind every product and initiative at Kolonihagen. It’s a grid made for all of us with an appetite for improvement.
